The official name of our church is Church of Christ, Union, of Berea, Kentucky.

Founded as a Free church of Christ in 1853 by the Reverend John Gregg Fee and a group of Christians who desired to worship in a fellowship not limited by denominational or racial distinctions, this church remains nonsectarian and open in full equality to all.

Officers

 

General Committee/Church Council

Subject to the authority of the congregation, the Church Council/General Committee shall serve as the Executive Committee for the Congregation. (See Resolution in Annual Report for composition of Church Council.)

Decision-making shall proceed principally by discussion and consensus. Formal decisions require a majority vote of the voting members present. A quorum shall consist of one more than half of the voting members.

Serve as executive committee for the congregation, preparing its agenda and serving as interim decision-making body subject always to congregational review.

Provide coordination for the various elements of the church program, working with and through the Boards to achieve maximum effectiveness and avoid duplication.

Communicate the activities of the Boards to the congregation.

Meet at least monthly, but during the first six months of the Pilot Project, semi-monthly if needed to insure that there is sufficient communication among Boards, among Boards and Officers, and among Boards and Pastor.

 

Faith Development Board

·         Be concerned for and provide leadership for thoughtful, inspirational and intentional faith development for persons of all ages, in collaboration with the Director of Faith Development;

·         Address the recruitment and training of church school teachers, Children’s Church leaders, adult class teachers, small group ministry leaders, and child care workers, as necessary;

·         Conduct background checks as appropriate, and approve hours for paid personnel.

·         Provide support for Youth Programs;

·         Collaborate with Mission and Service Board to create new educational and/or service activities or programs.

Mission and Service Board

·         Be concerned for the church’s service to the wider community through gifts of time, energy, skills, talents, and money.

·         Help meet the emergency needs of church families;

·         Select, coordinate, and promote the church’s local, national, and international involvements in mission (including Woman’s Industrial);

·         Coordinate the church’s ecumenical activities related to outreach through mission, e.g. Berea Ministerial Assoc., Kentucky Council of Churches, National Council of Churches, Church World Service, etc.;

·         Organize the annual Bazaar and/or other fundraising in support of mission giving;

·         Collaborate with Faith Development to create new service and/or educational activities.

Worship Board

·          Create passionate worship experiences, in collaboration with Pastor(s) and music staff;

·         Encourage aesthetic/visual qualities of the church conducive for worship;

·         Prepare and serve communion; arrange for ushers to welcome worshippers and collect offering; arrange for acolytes; schedule lay readers; arrange for flowers;

·         Arrange for pulpit supply, as needed.

Community Life and Growth Board

        ·         Be concerned for and work to create within our beloved community a hospitable, safe and inclusive space for all;

·         Provide fellowship opportunities such as Wednesday Night Live meals, all-church Potlucks, Lenten lunches, etc., throughout the year;

·         Follow up with visitors, invite to membership, collaborate with Pastor on sessions for prospective or new members;

·         Establish policies for and oversee use of kitchen.

Nurture and Care Board

·         Communicate effectively with Pastor to nurture the spiritual and physical well-being of church members and friends;

·         Care for members and friends through visits, rides, in-home communion;

·          Offer and/or arrange special assistance in times of illness, birth, death, or crises of any kind.

Properties Board

·         Manage the properties of the church, including land, buildings, and equipment, and the acceptance or disposition of property as authorized by the congregation.

Administration Board

·         Establish policies for office operations, in collaboration with pastor, secretary and custodian, to ensure smooth functioning of the church, including building use and scheduling;

·         Address office information technology, including computers, phone systems, website, and advise re: new IT needs;

·         Personnel – maintain position descriptions, terms of call for Pastor, annual contracts for other employees, evaluation processes, and working with appropriate Boards, initiate or participate in searches and hiring of staff;

·         Maintain attendance records.

·         Clerk is ex officio member

Pastoral Relations

A special liaison committee of the congregation, which actively seeks to support and maintain an open and healthy relationship between the pastor and the members of the congregation.  Its goals are the professional growth of the pastor, the well-being of the pastor and the congregation, and the promotion of mutual ministry between the pastor and the congregation. There are six members on the committee, two elected each year at the annual spring business meeting.  The members of the committee welcome your thoughts and input.
